What are audiology best practices?
Best Practice Guidelines for the Audiological Management of Adult Hearing Impairment has four main components:
1. Assessment and Goal Setting: Before considering treatment, a comprehensive case history, otoscopic inspection of the ear, cerumen removal (as needed), comprehensive hearing assessment, and lifestyle needs assessment should be conducted to ensure accurate diagnosis, determine candidacy for hearing treatment, and make recommendations compatible with the patient's lifestyle.
2. Technical Aspects of Treatment: This process includes hearing aid selection (type, style, technology, features, connectivity), quality control ensuring device performance, fitting and verification including using real ear measurements (a form of verification that the hearing aids are properly programmed), physical fit, and the discussion of hearing assistive devices.
3. Orientation, Counseling, and Follow-up: A detailed orientation, coupled with regular counseling and follow-up care with a dedicated audiologist can significantly enhance long-term success with hearing treatment.
4. Assessing Outcomes: While real ear measurement is a form of verification, outcome assessments are forms are completed as a form of validation that ensures effective hearing treatment and significant patient benefit.
By following Best Practices, Dr. Gleghorn ensures that you receive the maximum amount of benefit from whatever hearing treatment you require.
